Why is Felt Paper Used in Roofing?

What is Felt Paper?

Felt paper is a type of underlayment used for roofing. Underlayment is a protective second layer installed between the roof deck and the shingles. It helps to seal the roof against leaks, resulting in a roof that is stronger overall and lasts longer.

There are three main types of underlayment used in roofing:

  • Asphalt-saturated felt paper
  • Rubberised asphalt
  • Synthetic

Felt paper is crafted from a base of wood blends of polyester, bitumen, or cellulose. This base is then coated with asphalt or bitumen to repel water but still allow for breathability. It is applied across the entire roof deck prior to shingle placement.

Why Use Felt Paper in Roofing?

Roofing underlayment provides a crucial protective barrier between the rooftop and the home’s interior. This ensures that air flows and that humidity doesn’t become trapped in the roof and interior of the home.

Felt paper is a tried and true option for roofing underlayment. It is more affordable than purely synthetic underlayment, and it is easier to install.

Felt paper:

  • Provides a moisture barrier – it repels water to mitigate leaks, mold, and damage to ceilings, walls, and insulation. Your home remains dry year-round.
  • Complies with building codes to meet fire prevention requirements and meet a Class A Fire Rating for your roof.
  • Prevents stains from wood resin – wood resin can leach from the roof deck and stain the shingles if no felt paper is present.
  • Offers protection during construction – provides a protective layer from the elements prior to shingling being completed. Also adds a level of safety for roofing contractors working on the rooftop.
  • Extends the life of your roof – protects the home interior if shingles are cracked or missing. It also offers extra weather protection for your home.
  • Provides a more streamlined, even appearance to shingles for a better final result.

Felt paper (or another underlayment product) should be used across the entire roof, including eaves, valleys, low-slope surfaces, chimneys, skylights, and vent pipes.
